Fraud in car insurance affects us all

No doubt the economic crisis is having many negative consequences in our country and the insurance industry, unsurprisingly, has not escaped them. The situation in which Spain is triggered deception efforts against insurance companies, especially in the automotive sector. The Spanish insurance fraud increased by 12% last year, to a total of 149,792 cases investigated in 2012 by analyzed the 130 959 cases in 2011 , according to data presented by the Cooperative Research between Underwriters and Pension Funds (ICEA).

According to the second "Fraud Barometer Hotline" Insurer detected last year 19,316 cases of fraud in its portfolio of 1.8 million uninsured drivers , compared to 9,632 in 2009 confirmed. The company's Bankinter Group concludes that four of every hundred claims reported during the past year were attempted fraud, double the four years before.

Also, this study tells us where fraud occurs more frequently. Most, 91%, focuses on vehicle damage , and in three out of four cases it was found that the damage had not occurred declared in the accident, and the driver was looking to fix without paying. The remaining 9% of fraud is for injury parts , whereby the affected simulates or exaggerates an injury or accident linked to a disease or injury prior thereto. The most common of all diseases: cervical sprain.

How does it affect us?
As this trend is obviously a cost to insurers, this report estimated at 1,002 million euros annually. But in addition to other drivers, according to the barometer Hotline, fraud urged by 16% the average insurance premium kind to others, the most widespread. This is 38 euros more per year for each insured, raising the quota by 52% compared to 2010.

In addition to the data analyzed, Hotline conducted a survey of 2,400 drivers license and insurance for the views of the Spanish on such scams. The data are revealing,10.7% admitted having cheated on their insurance, while 33% do not consider it particularly serious and up to 30% would not hesitate to participate in a scam . Although I must say that the most surprising answers lie in justification, since 70% blames the lifestyle of Spanish and 11% defends himself by saying that "they all do."

As we see, unfortunately in Spain there is still some social justification for such actions primarily by traditional rogue country. Although it must be said that the figures for fraud in car insurance in Spain is very similar to that in other countries like the U.S. and  UK.
